Don’t Procrastinate! Just Start … Up

Don't procrastinate! Just Startup

Many of us love the idea of owning a business, being our own boss, seeing our brand counted among the best in the industry … but most of these beautiful dreams evaporate in the light of day. We want to be a successful startup, but we get stuck on the “start.” Well, we all need a bit of a wake-up call or a bit of a shake-out-of-your-comfort-zone-and-start-up call!

It was Walt Disney who said: “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them,” and it was through Deepak Roy, the founder of GeniusLead that we saw that this is really true. There were many things that could have held him back – his high paying steady job, a new addition to his family with his wife pregnant, rules and regulations of starting up a business in the UK. All this and more could have held him back, but he didn’t let fears bog him down. He took a bold step towards his dream and worked at it with all his might!

We aren’t saying you should rush in headlong with no plan or weighing the consequences. That is a recipe for disaster. Rather, the point is not to let our FEAR keep us back. Sit down, calculate the cost, weigh out the pros and cons but make sure your cons are really worth putting your dreams on hold.

Here are a few pointers to help you stop procrastinating and start doing more.

1)    Put it down on paper

Write it down and don’t mince words. Let your dreams out in full technicolour and jot down all that you want your business to be. Even if it is just steps that might take time and effort which you may not have at the moment, write them out. Don’t’ hold back – expansion plans, prime real estate for your office – dream big and write it all out.

Narrow it down now and chalk out a plan on how you will achieve those dreams, step-by-step. What is the first thing that you need to do? Then what? Make a list and make it your goal to tick off as many as possible as soon as you can.

2)    Take Baby Steps

Look at your list and focus on the achievable micro steps. This will give you the satisfaction that you are doing something to achieve your dream. Do it every day. At least one task that is connected to your start up vision. Talk to at least one person about your vision every day. Make one phone call that could put the wheels in motion on a task you need to get done. Do not sleep without achieving that one step towards your business.

3)    Don’t Go Chasing After Perfection

Yes, we do want everything to be perfect before we launch our business, but realistically this isn’t possible. There will be lessons you will learn, there will be new hurdles you will face and there will be mess-ups that you will recover from. Get the basics right. Put up that board. Now build your business.

Steve Job, the man known to be a perfectionist launched the Mac bug-ridden as it was with the words: “Real artists ship.” The product was by no means perfect, but it had potential and it got right into the homes of people who loved it imperfect as it was. We aren’t advocating launching a product that isn’t tested properly or that could get you into trouble of course. The point is not to get so tied down in the pursuit of perfection that your ship sinks before it sees water! Don’t wait a lifetime to start a perfect business but spend that lifetime perfecting your business.

All the very best to all you entrepreneurs out there. Dream a dream and work your socks off to get it to reality!

Foxtons - Startup Success
Foxtons – From Rags to Riches

An ambitious teenager Jon Hunt, knew what he wanted at the age of 19. His startup capital of a borrowed £ 100 has now made him a billionaire with an estimated fortune of a cool £1.07 billion! Foxtons, his firm, is now synonymous with property and estate agency in the UK and is going strong.

That doesn’t mean it was always a smooth ride. The company definitely had its share of challenges. Talking about the property crash of 1988–94, Jon Hunt said: “…Foxtons had no significant lettings department and as a consequence it barely hung on – we were close to going bust every day”. But they triumphed and came out louder and more successful than ever before.

Their single-minded focus has earned them the reputation of being called “London’s biggest, brashest estate agency.” Jon Hunt has been criticized for his methods and has faced his share of let downs but even his competitors acknowledge that he is a force to reckon with. Harry Hill, chairman of Britain’s biggest firm of estate agents, Countrywide says of Jon: “He has built a business on a model that I wouldn’t want to replicate, but he has done phenomenally well out of the industry, and for that, you have to take your hat off and say well done.

Now there were two great success stories to motivate you . Here are a few great startup idea compilations for you to startup on your own.

Career Advice: Ask and You Shall Receive – Deepak Roy

Ask and Live Life with no Regrets by Deepak Roy

“Ask” – simple concept, isn’t it? You want something, you ask for it. In reality though, this is one basic area that most people struggle with. Fear of rejection, avoiding confrontation, thinking it might be an imposition – oh so many reasons we give ourselves. In all my years of working as an employee and a business owner, I have realized that this – the failure to ask – is the biggest enemy to progress. You have the desire, you have the ability but you don’t get the opportunity and all because you couldn’t ask for it. What a loss wouldn’t you say?

This is why I decided to write this blog in my Career Advice series. I have faced this situation innumerable times where just getting up the nerve to ask, sometimes repeatedly, has saved my skin and my career. I hope my story and the simple tips I have to offer help you as well.

Don't Miss Out On Opportunities! ASK business quote
Don’t Miss Out On Opportunities! ASK

Before I offer advice, let me start off by telling you how this has worked for me in three situations at the beginning of my career.

The way I landed my first real job was a lesson I won’t forget. I was on the lookout for a job, new in Bangalore and facing the usual task of a job search. One day as I was riding in the back of a bus, I got talking with a nice young man who worked as a peon for a software company. Now he was just a peon, what would come of asking him anything, right? I asked anyway. I told him I was looking for a job and a few weeks later I was hired in his company! My first real job and all because I didn’t hesitate to ask!

Lesson Learned: Do not assume that nothing will come out of asking. The worst that could come out of it is that you have a great conversation and head your separate ways.

asking-is-wisdom-business-quote
Asking is wisdom

The next time I learnt the power of asking and persistence was when I attended an interview in a prestigious software company a few years later. It was a big deal and I knew it was the thing I needed for my career to really take off. I passed three rounds and I was ecstatic. After the final HR round, I sat there waiting to be told what next and expecting to be given the job. Instead, a man came out and said that I wasn’t selected and that I should go home. I was perplexed and disappointed. It was lunch time by then and I was awfully hungry, but I needed to know why I was rejected so I didn’t budge. I prayed about it and decided I would wait. At around 4 in the afternoon, the lady who had conducted my HR interview came out and asked me why I was waiting. I politely told her I needed to know what was wrong with my CV. She said that there was a mismatch and some sort of confusion and repeated that I should go home as I was rejected. I respectfully asked her if I could know what was wrong exactly. I don’t know what made her change her mind suddenly – I think it was my persistence – because she told me to wait and sit for the next round. Well, the story ends with an offer letter from them two weeks later. And within 6 months the company had me in Scotland, which was another milestone in my dream map.

Lesson Learned: Ask even when it seems like there is no hope. Don’t accept rejection without knowing why.

everything you want is out there

Back from Scotland, I knew my next stop needed to be the UK. Working my way up in Logica, I built up the experience and skill needed to reach out. I was offered a job in Perot, Honeywell and Mindtree. All the offers were great, but I knew what I wanted, so I asked for an on-site position in the UK. I risked the chance that the companies would think I was demanding a position abroad when they were offering me something in India. Perot thought otherwise and said I could get an onsite position in 6 months. Perot it would be. 6 months working for them in India, and I gently reminded them about the promised position. I was immediately transferred to the UK.

Lesson Learned: Know what you want and don’t hesitate to ask for it.

Now these were some lessons I learned in my career as an employee. It brought me where I am today and I am grateful. Thinking back on those moments of choice, my life could have been very different if I hadn’t opened my mouth and asked for it. I am not saying that it will always work out and you will never be rejected. I have faced rejections too. But if I had let fear of rejection still my tongue, I would have lived a life of regrets. A life wishing that I had asked.

In the next blog, I will talk about some specific things that will help you build the needed confidence to ASK. For now, I leave you with a challenge: Think of something that you really want but haven’t actually asked for. Now go ASK. Your dreams deserve a chance!

A Step in Support of Animal Conservation

A Step in Support of Animal Conservation_GeniusLead

The conservation of animals is a cause that we need to fight for. As more and more species become extinct, man has come to realize the loss of a piece of nature – a piece that our future generations will only see in history books and as fossils. GeniusLead wishes to do its part in furthering animal conservation and we are excited to tell you that we have a project in the works that is aimed at doing just that. More details to come later!

For now, here are a few quotes to emphasize the importance of these animals in our lives.

Technology That Can Save The Planet

Technology that can save the planet? Haven’t we all actually blamed technology for ruining the environment in the first place? True, the planet has been ruined by the abuse of its resources in the name of tech, but it is equally true that the right technology can and will heal the planet.

Tapping into renewable sources of energy like wind, solar and hydroelectric power can make a whole lot of difference to the environment and technology helps make it more efficient. By effectively tapping and dispensing these renewables, technology has played a huge role in stalling the climate crisis. Then there is the tech that makes the paperless revolution possible. Going Digital can and is saving millions of trees as we saw in a previous blog. This series of blogs is dedicated to exploring new and innovative ways of saving the planet and we are open to featuring some of your ideas. For now, let’s explore three rad ways where tech is helping save the planet.

Carbon Capture

The havoc wreaked by carbon emissions on our environment is a horror story being played out every day. Capturing this poison and alchemizing it into something productive is a solution that is being made possible by companies like Carbonfree Chemicals. Direct capture of carbon emissions from a cement plant and converting it into commercial carbon-negative products is the plan. Their site says: “Carbonfree Chemicals’ vision is to have new or existing industrial manufacturing facilities, refineries, or even power plants equipped (or retrofitted) with SkyMine® technology. This technology will remove carbon from flue gases and transform it into solids like sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), and also produce hydrochloric acid, caustic soda, and bleach.” The idea is brilliant to say the least. They foresee a reduction of 300,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year through this initiative. This is just one of the many companies and organisations that are working to make this a reality.

Organic Flow Battery

A major breakthrough in the use of renewables is the Organic Flow Battery by Harvard. This is a metal-free flow battery and makes use of carbon-based molecules called quinones and which provides an inexpensive and effective storage of energy. This could replace conventional battery tech that is quite expensive. These organic flow batteries can store larger amounts of energy than conventional batteries. Here’s a quick look at the technology:

Drones in Wildlife conservation

The use of drones has made quite the difference in wildlife conservation. Drones can reach places that humans can’t and give us more effective access to wildlife. Spanning large spaces over wildlife reserves, these drones can keep track of endangered species and protect them from poachers. By providing a keener set of eyes, these drones can help conservationists a great deal.

Here is an overview of the amazing work these drones are enabling in Africa:

Times Of India:

Govt school adopts mobile app to record students’ attendance.

The Government Higher Primary School at Hale Kesare village has become the first state-run school in the district to use a mobile app for recording students’ attendance.

The ‘Smart Attendance’ mobile app was launched on Saturday by the scion of the erstwhile Mysuru royal family Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar. The app has been developed by Genius Lead, United Kingdom-based software company, which was founded by Deepak Roy, a Mysurean and one-time resident of Hale Kesare village.

Pointing out that he had been able to realise his dreams by following his passion, Roy said, “I was good at computer science since my childhood. I worked without a salary, on my laptop for one year at my first job. I did it because I did not want to lose the opportunity of working at a good software company. I just followed my goal and improved my skills.”

Highlighting the environmental benefits of using an app for attendance in lieu of registers, Roy said, “Not only will the app ease the process of taking attendance, but it will also reduce use of paper at schools. If about 4,000 schools adopt this app, then more than ten trees can be saved from felling in a year. If all schools in the state adopt this technology, then more than 2,000 trees will be saved from the axe.”

Go Paperless – Why it has to be done NOW!

Appalling effects of deforestation - Go Paperless

Yes, we all know that the production of paper is costing our environment quite a good deal. Trees are being felled, the environmental balance is off and a lot more. But do we really understand the seriousness of the situation? Fell a tree, plant a tree in its place – is it as simple as that?

To put it bluntly, NO. No, it isn’t as simple as that. We at Genius Lead are very passionate about conserving the environment. Passionate may be putting it lightly. We are deeply affected and disturbed by what is being done to the planet. We shudder to think what will be left for our children. We decided to take ACTION. But before that, we’d like to show you why going paperless is that important.

Numbers Tell All

Statistics put world consumption of paper to have grown 400% in the last 40 years. Research published in the journal Nature shows that over 15 billion trees are cut down each year, and the global number of trees has fallen by approximately 46% since the start of human civilization. Humans have thus effectively wiped out nearly half of what nature intended for the earth, and this number includes the little we have restored through initiatives to plant trees.

While not discounting re-planting drives, the point is that the effect of PREVENTION far exceeds attempts at a cure. Going paperless hits that pain point and weeds out the problem at its root. That is why going paperless is that important.

The impact of using paper is especially profound when calculated in small towns like my home city Mysore in India. In an attempt to start rectifying the situation, I created an app called the Smart Attendance. These are the calculations that motivated the effort that went into getting my app out.

Each school uses 8 sheets per month in the Attendance Register to mark the ATTENDANCE of students.

1 sheet = 15 inches long

8 sheets per month = 120 Inches = 10 Feet per month

There are about 4000 schools in Mysore = 40,000 Feet per month

This means 7.5 Miles of paper/Month (12 Km/Month)

= 90 Mile/Year (144 Km/Year)

This means 7 TREES are felled every year in Mysore District for this.

Research shows that there are around 1.3 million schools in India. [Source: MHRD data]

1.3 million schools = 13 million Feet Per Month

= 2462 Miles/Month (3962 Km/Month)

= 29,544 Miles/Year (47544 Km/Year)

About 1 tree is felled for every 13 miles of paper

(Source: Research from Richard Branson)

= 2,272 TREES are felled per year just to mark the attendance in India!!

One Small Step for Man, A Giant Leap for the Planet

Can you imagine what a change it would mean by a small step. This is why I have launched the Smart Attendance app. Teachers will no longer have to use paper when they take attendance and it will also eliminate the time consuming task of keeping records manually. I am working fervently to get this out to the schools in India. I have started in my hometown Mysore, which is small city in India. The app was launch edon the 22nd of July in Mysore and the Maharaja of Mysore His Highness Maharaja Yuduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar supported the event with his honourable presence.
