Mysore Zoo and its role in Animal Conservation

The beautiful  Mysore zoo has 157 acres of land lush with greenery, and the abundant animals it hosts is a sight to behold! It is also close to our heart as we worked tirelessly on releasing the My Zoo app that was designed as a guide for the Mysore Zoo. Our app is out and had a great reception at its launch in the Zoo Director’s Meet. Here is a little bit about the Mysore Zoo. The zoo that is abundant in animal life and is also rich in cultural heritage. Do have a read and make sure you visit it. And download our app from the Playstore to guide you and make the best of our visit: http://bit.ly/2zygdlQ

The History of Mysore Zoo

and was designed by a German horticulturist and landscaper, Mr G.H. Krumbeigal. Sri Chamarajendra Wodeyar the Maharaja of Mysore had instructed the creation of the zoo in 1892. During its earlier days it was called the palace zoo. Its gates were open to the public since 1902.

Initially, the zoo was started on a ten-acre land, but over the years it has gradually expanded. The Karanji lake is also part of the zoological park. The zoo has more than 168 species from more than twenty-five countries. Some of the animals you can see on your visit are white pelicans, rhinoceros, African and Indian elephants, dhole, wallaby, lions, tigers, crocodiles and giraffes.

When Inside

You can comfortably spend a day walking past the bird and animal enclosures. The enclosures are designed to keep the interactions safe between animals and humans. The health and nutrition of the animals are well monitored by the authorities to prevent them from getting any diseases. You can also take the battery operated buggy service to tour the zoological park. Inside the park, you can buy water and eatables in designated areas. Sri Chamarajendra zoological garden draws a large number of visitors from around the globe because of its excellent upkeep of the facilities. The GPS enabled map on our app will help you find your way easily.

Animal Conservation Efforts

Mysore zoo has two conservation programs – animal adoption and the Koorgalli rescue. Koorgalli rescue program focuses on the rehabilitation of animals captured in man and animal conflict, disabled and injured animals.

The Animal Adoption Program

The animal adoption program was introduced in 1984.When an animal is adopted, the financial contribution made helps feed the recipient for the mentioned duration. A black-crowned night heron or rose-ringed parakeet or a star tortoise can get nourishment for a whole year for a sum of two thousand rupees.

The park has split the animals into A, B and C group based on species. The adoption fee varies based on the chosen animal, reptile or bird. This is a cause that we at GeniusLead take very seriously and in the future our app will allow you to make donations and support the cause of animal adoption direct from your app.

When you adopt an animal, you adopt a life anf a piece of nature for our future generations.  You also get a picture of the adopted animal, passes, an adoption certificate, and a tax exemption form.

If you plan to visit Mysore, do allocate some time to spend at the zoo and marvel at nature. The zoo is maintained by the Zoo Authority of Karnataka. A key objective behind the creation of the Mysore zoo was educating the people about animals, animal conservation, studying and learning about different species of birds, reptiles, mammals and animal breeding. You will find detailed information about each animal on our app. We have also enabled an audio version of the information to make it enjoyable for you and also to help blind ones to get a feel of the animal and know more about it. A Step in Support of Animal Conservation

The conservation of animals is a cause that we need to fight for. As more and more species become extinct, man has come to realize the loss of a piece of nature – a piece that our future generations will only see in history books and as fossils. GeniusLead wishes to do its part in furthering animal conservation and we are excited to tell you that we have a project in the works that is aimed at doing just that. More details to come later!

For now, here are a few quotes to emphasize the importance of these animals in our lives.

Technology That Can Save The Planet

Technology that can save the planet? Haven’t we all actually blamed technology for ruining the environment in the first place? True, the planet has been ruined by the abuse of its resources in the name of tech, but it is equally true that the right technology can and will heal the planet.

Tapping into renewable sources of energy like wind, solar and hydroelectric power can make a whole lot of difference to the environment and technology helps make it more efficient. By effectively tapping and dispensing these renewables, technology has played a huge role in stalling the climate crisis. Then there is the tech that makes the paperless revolution possible. Going Digital can and is saving millions of trees as we saw in a previous blog. This series of blogs is dedicated to exploring new and innovative ways of saving the planet and we are open to featuring some of your ideas. For now, let’s explore three rad ways where tech is helping save the planet.

Carbon Capture

The havoc wreaked by carbon emissions on our environment is a horror story being played out every day. Capturing this poison and alchemizing it into something productive is a solution that is being made possible by companies like Carbonfree Chemicals. Direct capture of carbon emissions from a cement plant and converting it into commercial carbon-negative products is the plan. Their site says: “Carbonfree Chemicals’ vision is to have new or existing industrial manufacturing facilities, refineries, or even power plants equipped (or retrofitted) with SkyMine® technology. This technology will remove carbon from flue gases and transform it into solids like sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), and also produce hydrochloric acid, caustic soda, and bleach.” The idea is brilliant to say the least. They foresee a reduction of 300,000 tons of CO2 emissions per year through this initiative. This is just one of the many companies and organisations that are working to make this a reality.

Organic Flow Battery

A major breakthrough in the use of renewables is the Organic Flow Battery by Harvard. This is a metal-free flow battery and makes use of carbon-based molecules called quinones and which provides an inexpensive and effective storage of energy. This could replace conventional battery tech that is quite expensive. These organic flow batteries can store larger amounts of energy than conventional batteries. Here’s a quick look at the technology:

Drones in Wildlife conservation

The use of drones has made quite the difference in wildlife conservation. Drones can reach places that humans can’t and give us more effective access to wildlife. Spanning large spaces over wildlife reserves, these drones can keep track of endangered species and protect them from poachers. By providing a keener set of eyes, these drones can help conservationists a great deal.

Here is an overview of the amazing work these drones are enabling in Africa:
