Go Paperless – Why it has to be done NOW!

Yes, we all know that the production of paper is costing our environment quite a good deal. Trees are being felled, the environmental balance is off and a lot more. But do we really understand the seriousness of the situation? Fell a tree, plant a tree in its place – is it as simple as that?

To put it bluntly, NO. No, it isn’t as simple as that. We at Genius Lead are very passionate about conserving the environment. Passionate may be putting it lightly. We are deeply affected and disturbed by what is being done to the planet. We shudder to think what will be left for our children. We decided to take ACTION. But before that, we’d like to show you why going paperless is that important.

Numbers Tell All

Statistics put world consumption of paper to have grown 400% in the last 40 years. Research published in the journal Nature shows that over 15 billion trees are cut down each year, and the global number of trees has fallen by approximately 46% since the start of human civilization. Humans have thus effectively wiped out nearly half of what nature intended for the earth, and this number includes the little we have restored through initiatives to plant trees.

While not discounting re-planting drives, the point is that the effect of PREVENTION far exceeds attempts at a cure. Going paperless hits that pain point and weeds out the problem at its root. That is why going paperless is that important.

The impact of using paper is especially profound when calculated in small towns like my home city Mysore in India. In an attempt to start rectifying the situation, I created an app called the Smart Attendance. These are the calculations that motivated the effort that went into getting my app out.

Each school uses 8 sheets per month in the Attendance Register to mark the ATTENDANCE of students.

1 sheet = 15 inches long

8 sheets per month = 120 Inches = 10 Feet per month

There are about 4000 schools in Mysore = 40,000 Feet per month

This means 7.5 Miles of paper/Month (12 Km/Month)

= 90 Mile/Year (144 Km/Year)

This means 7 TREES are felled every year in Mysore District for this.

Research shows that there are around 1.3 million schools in India. [Source: MHRD data]

1.3 million schools = 13 million Feet Per Month

= 2462 Miles/Month (3962 Km/Month)

= 29,544 Miles/Year (47544 Km/Year)

About 1 tree is felled for every 13 miles of paper

(Source: Research from Richard Branson)

= 2,272 TREES are felled per year just to mark the attendance in India!!

One Small Step for Man, A Giant Leap for the Planet

Can you imagine what a change it would mean by a small step. This is why I have launched the Smart Attendance app. Teachers will no longer have to use paper when they take attendance and it will also eliminate the time consuming task of keeping records manually. I am working fervently to get this out to the schools in India. I have started in my hometown Mysore, which is small city in India. The app was launch edon the 22nd of July in Mysore and the Maharaja of Mysore His Highness Maharaja Yuduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar supported the event with his honourable presence.

The Maharajas of Mysore in Education- The Legacy Lives On

I trust that under the enlivening influence of English education which has done so much for the progress of the Nation, Mysore will not be found behind the rest of India.

– Sri Krishnaraja Wadiyar III

The contribution of the Maharajas of Mysore to the improvement of education has a long legacy. The famous Mysore University was set up by Sri Krishnaraja Wadiyar IV and has been a pioneer in higher education and the betterment of the education sector. The welfare of his subjects was prime on the Maharaja’s focus and in his far-sighted wisdom, he saw the role education had to play in it.

The contributions of the Maharajas started much earlier however. The Raja’s Free School was established by Sri Krishnaraja Wadiyar’s grandfather, Sri Krishnaraja Wadiyar III in 1883. This set the foundation to what the rulers of Mysore would keep as one of their foremost goals. The Free School offered high-quality education to the boys of Mysore without charge.

Since then, the Maharajas have championed the cause of education. This spirit is held high by the now ruler of Mysore – Maharaja Yaduveer Krishnadatta Chamaraja Wadiyar. When he heard about our event and our intention of contributing to bettering the education processes for government schools, he graciously accepted to honour the occasion with his presence. He is an inspiration to the future generations and we are deeply grateful.

We look forward to having the Maharaja with us at the event. The Invitation is below. It is on the 22nd of July at Government Higher Primary School, Hale Kesare, Mysore. We look forward to having you there!
